RYA Power Boat Courses

The RYA Powerboat training scheme offers you the chance to hone your skills on smaller craft, generally under 25 foot. Beginners can start with basic seamanship skills and continue through the scheme, or those with more experience can join the scheme at the appropriate level.
Principal Power also offer the RYA Motor Boat scheme, try our
Motor Cruising courses for training on bigger vessels.
A list of Powerboat courses available are listed below, though if you can't see the course you are looking for please give us a call. The courses are run throughout the year, either on our 6.7 metre RIB or on your own boat should you have one. Please

Power Boat Courses

Powerboat Level 1
-
Provides a practical introduction to power boating and boat handling skills
Course Type: POWERBOAT, Adult & Junior course
Suggested minimum pre-course experience: None
Course Content: Launching and preparing the boat, basic boat handling and returning to shore. Background theory.
Assumed Knowledge: None. Minimum age 8. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued an endorsed certifcate.
Ability After Course: Able to drive under supervision
Minimum Duration: One day

Powerboat Level 2
-
A two day course which covers navigation, pilotage and boat handling.
Course Type: POWERBOAT, Adult & Junior course
Suggested minimum pre-course experience: None. May be preceded by Level 1
Course Content: All you need to know for self-sufficient powerboating at a basic level.
Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the
boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat.
Assumed Knowledge: None. Minimum age 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued an endorsed certificate.
Ability After Course: Able to helm a powerboat during the day in familiar waters in favourable weather conditions.
Minimum Duration: Two days

Intermediate Course

Teaches powerboating up to
the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day. The
theory section includes a detailed passage plan and the practical
covers boat preparation, boat handling, pilotage, passage making &
man overboard.
Course Type: POWERBOAT, Adult Course
Course Content: A progression from Level 2, introducing pilotage, navigation and boat
handling techniques for planing boats on coastal waters by day.
Assumed Knowledge: Minimum age of 16. Candidates should be competent to the standard of
National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with the coastal endorsement.
Ability After Course: Able to plan and execute short coastal pasages by day.
Minimum Duration: Two days

Advanced Powerboat

Provides the skills and background knowledge to operate in coastal waters by day and night in more demanding conditions.
Course Type: POWERBOAT, Adult Course
Course Content: Boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards
required to drive a planing boat safetly by day and night in tidal
coastal waters with which the candidate is familiar.
Assumed Knowledge: Minimum age 17. Candidates should be competent to the standard of
National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with the coastal endorsement.
Understanding of navigation up to day skipper theory level.
Ability After Course: Able to plan and execute short coastal pasages by day and night.
Minimum Duration: Two days
